Course report - Dr.Richard Charon BDS
The Hands-on Relative Analgesia (RA) Courses which I run from my practice at Newbury are designed to allow a small number of participants to benefit from learning the theory and practical aspects of this wonderful tool in the armoury which we have at our disposal to help overcome mild to moderate dental anxiety. In particular my courses benefit from being held in a real life private dental practice setting.
These one-day courses allows close interactivity between participants and presenter with maximum opportunity for questions and discussion ( including over a working restaurant lunch).
Today's participants all had already installed RA and had used it for some years. They attended for an update and for an opportunity for their dental nurse to have an in-depth understanding of the subject. Some nurses volunteered to discover the benefits of RA themselves and took the the opportunity to try it out, to better enable them to explain the benefits to their patients.
The morning as usual, was devoted to a powerpoint presentation with almost 250 "slides" , with discussion of the background, theory and current best practice.
During the afternoon session , three patients were treated "in real-time" under RA sedation. Two adults and one 7 year old child. Following this the patients were able to report briefly to the participants. All patients gave the experience a resounding thumbs-up. The day concluded with a discussion of the cases and thanks to my staff and family for their help and support.
For anyone unfamiliar with the technique or considering offering this Practice-building service, the results need to be seen to be believed !
The results of the feedback questionnaire were as follows:.........
Attendees were asked to rate the following:
a) Venue
b) Facilities
c) Audio-visuals
d) Relevance to subject
e) Speaker
On the following scale:
1) Poor
2) Adequate
3) Satisfactory
4) Good
5) Excellent.
None of the replies gave a "Poor" or "Adequate" score to any of the questions.

b) 20% Satisfactory : 80% Excellent
c) 40% Good : 60% Excellent ( Ausio-visuals will be upgraded for the next course !)
