Are you risking your registration?!
We have always been obliged to manage our patient's dental anxiety - even at the risk of a law suit if we fail to do so. Now this is even more clearly laid out in the most recent GDC Standards document.
Are you complying with all aspects of Principle
One – Patient Expectations - in the these Standards?
5/8 items
in the list of Patient Expectations (Page 10) may be directly or indirectly related to to the appropriate treatment
of patients with dental anxiety or phobia.

Principle One
"Put patients’ interests first"
Patient expectations
Patients expect:
1) To be
listened to and have their preferences and concerns taken
into account.
2) To be
treated as individuals and have their cultures and values respected.
3) That all members of the dental team will be honest
and act with integrity.
4) That all
aspects of their health and well-being will be considered and they will receive dental care that
is appropriate for them.
5) To be treated in a clean and safe environment. That reasonable adjustments will be made for
any disabilities.
6) That their
interests will be put before financial gain and business
need.
7) Redress if they suffer harm during dental
treatment.
8) That their
dental pain and anxiety will be managed appropriately
The highlights, bold and underlines text are my doing. The text is directly from the GDC document
In my 38 years as a GDP I have found that Inhalation Sedation will cope with 90% of the patients I see in my high street practice with moderate to severe dental anxiety BUT please note- NOT for true phobics who have psychological or psychiatric issues, which may or may not relate to previous dental experiences.
Why not consider introducing this excellent method of anxiety control to add to your offering and by the way, ensure your compliance with the GDC standards in this respect.
