Three headline topics presented at today's SAAD conference with a record attendance.
Excellent presentation with video of cases showing intranasal Midazolam on its own for short procedures or pre cannnulation for needle phobics. Mainly for special needs. though could have uses beyond this group of patients. NB immediate cannulation is required even if no additional dose is used to permit use of Flumazenil if needed.
DCP syllabus announced for Inhalation Sedation. 2nd SAAD pilot, full in Nov. Next planned for June 2012. Candidates selected only IF they go on to use it under supervision. Training standards as per new dental graduate. Additional material on Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology to make up for lack of coverage in their basic training. Generally excellent feedback from the 1st class of 11.
New printed guidance booklets issued for training standards for advanced techniques for adults and a separate booklet guide on maintaining standards in conscious sedation for dentistry.
3 levels of sedation with differerng requirements for CPD activity and training updates recognised.
Level 1 = basic techniques. I.S. / IV Midazolam/ Oral & Intra-nasal.
Level 2 = Advanced techniques for adults: Propofol, Ketamine, Polypharmacies, Opiods, Sevofluorane etc
Level 3= Advanced techniques for children
Controversy as some PCTs apparently saying Flumazenil must never be used. David Craig and others say this is nonsense and needs to be challenged.
