Competency in Inhalation Sedation for DCPs

Congratulations Laura

Many congratulations to our Dental Therapist, Laura Woosey BSc. on achieving her competency certification in Inhalation Sedation.

Laura joined Newbury Smilemakers shortly after qualifying.
She has continued with us under the new ownership of Dr. Charl Du Toit and our new name of Newbury Smile Studio.

Laura soon discovered that we had expertise and many years experience in using "RA" to help our anxious patients and those with a gag reflex.

Initially, when such a patient presented for treatment that would normally have been within Laura's scope of practice,  I would sedate the patient and oversee them whilst Laura carried out the prescribed treatment.

However Laura was keen to extend herself and during 2012 attended one of the one-day hands-on theory and practical courses in RA that I run, ably assisted by Chris Charon RDN, having observed a good number of cases being treated and seeing the obvious benefits to the patient and herself.

She then embarked on the journey of gaining a certificate of competency, which entailed treating the recommended 12 cases under supervision, discussion of the cases and writing up her Logbook of Experience, which I checked and signed off.  I deemed Laura to be highly capable and professional in her approach and at the end of the process she undertook a 30 question MCQ with a pass mark of 70% and scored 91%.

As a result I am delighted that I was able to certify Laura's  competency and she will go forward in her chosen profession with this highly valuable skill to add to her portfolio, which as well as breaking down barriers to treatment for patients will make her own working life less stressful when dealing with this group of often needy people.

If this is of interest to you or DCPs you know, please contact me for information on the one-to-one in-house mentoring program I can offer at your own practice.
