Education Facility is Almost Ready

Our new self-contained education facility, adjacent to Richard Charon at Newbury Smilemakers Dental practice, in Newbury, is close to completion. There are 2 rooms. The seminar room can hold 14-16 people with a projector & screen. The other is an ante-room, which could double for a smaller breakout or parallel group of 6-8 people.

A new appointment for the Private VT Project

In addition to my other activities and upcoming articles to do with Inhalation Sedation, I can announce that I have been accepted onto a panel of lecturers, joining some illustrious names in UK dentistry, for the newly created Private Vocational Training project, spearheaded by Dr. Andy Lane, whose Apollonia House dental  practice is hosting my next course in Saddleworth.

My time commitment is not fully settled yet but I believe Andy has in mind that the sedation modules will be delivered to the year 2 Private VTs.

I would envisage EVERY dentist taking up this route into private practice, would undertake RA training and mentorship through to competency certification.

An excerpt from "The Competent Graduate" published in 2000,relating to Conscious Sedation in Dentistry states:

" 3) Defining Competence

At graduation, dentists should be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using conscious sedation techniques and should be capable of providing effective sedation for selected patients undergoing straightforward dental procedures in the primary care setting.
This means that the graduate should:
i) be able to assess a patient's need and suitability for conscious sedation and
ii) possess both the ability and confidence to apply knowledge and skills relating to inhalation sedation (using nitrous oxide and oxygen) and intravenous sedation (using midazolam)."

So this is an exciting new chapter for me.

Can I get one of your votes for one of the top 20 Private Dentists Competition?

Why would you even consider it?

Well my case is a little unusual but since almost 50% of the adult population have some degree of dental anxiety, then any way practices can overcome this is a practice builder and a boon to the practitioner.

As "The RA Coach"©,  I have been responsible for helping anxious private dental patients, way beyond my own private practice. I have done this by enabling other practitioners to gain the knowledge and confidence to introduce RA as a service.

Private practitioners and sometimes their teams, from Inverness to Kent and from Galway to the Channel Islands have been attending the courses I developed since 2003. Usually based in my own private practice, though if numbers or demand dictate , either from my private dental lab's own eduction suite or from other private practices.

These include, Dr. Richard Fretwell's Guidepost practice in Morpeth, Northumberland, Dr. Anne O'Donnell's practice in Wexford, The Smile group's flagship practice in Dublin and in Nov. 2011, Andy Lane's Apollonia House in Saddleworth , near Oldham.

Now those practitioner's own anxious patients are able to accept treatment, including more advanced or ambitious plans that they might otherwise reject. So this technique is a practice builder.

The courses I have developed to teach dentists (including specialists) and all members of the dental team have brought IHS/RA potentially to tens of thousands of anxious patients.

The RA Coach© and the training I have provided will be my legacy to the profession and to all those anxious people now able to accept treatment including facial aesthetics and extensive plans they would otherwise have avoided.

Anticipating the Newbury RA course 15th Jan 2011

I am starting to look forward to our next RA course on 15th Jan in Newbury (Thatcham in fact).
It will follow the tried and trusted formula we used last November and have developed over 23 courses since 2003.
Teams will be attending from Winchester, Sutton, Camberley and Galway, yes that is on the on west coast of Ireland.  Indeed this team will not the first to come to Newbury from Galway.
Our new trainee dental nurse, Kate, will also attend for a crash course. She has had six months dental nursing experience but only started with us this week, so RA will be new to her.
We will be eight Dentists (maybe nine) and eleven dental nurses.
The teaching day will be held for the 3rd time at Precsion Dental Studio's education suite in Thatcham.
If this is of interest to you or anyone you know , please get in touch.

Inhalation Sedation Course November 2010

We had a full house attending our Hands-on Inhalation Sedation / RA course at Precision Dental Studio's Education Suite in Thatcham, near Newbury, on Saturday 6th November.

My warm thanks to the following, whose generosity and help made the day possible.

Janet Pickles of RA Medical Services for the free loan of a mobile stand and RA mixing head to enable me to run the course at this venue

Precision Dental Studio for their excellent facility and making available the wonderful Maurice to lay in the Cat5 cabling between the lecture/presentation room and the surgery at the other end of the building requiring much clambering about in the roof space and for looking after us on the day. Not bad for 70+ !

Mark Chapman of Velopex for their generous and free loan of the Aseptico mobile dental chair for demonstrations.

Dhru Shah of Dentinaltubules.com for providing delegates with the tiniest USB MP3 players I've ever seen.

Dan Oatway of Network Newbury for help and cabling/connection solutions for the audio-visuals.

Last but not least a big thanks to my wife Chris and the team for their assistance on the day, arranging the lunch and generally supporting me.
I will follow this up with some testimonials/comments very soon but in the meantime, they say a picture paints a thousand words , so here are several thousand to give you a flavour of the day .....

The lecture session starts the day

Paying close attention to the details

Passing on 35 years of accumulated knowledge
